Fall officially started on September 22 this year. We know that by simply looking at a calendar on our wall. But the people who lived here in Arkansas a thousand years ago didn’t have that modern convenience. Instead, their calendar was the landscape. It’s really interesting how they did it, and without any modern tools. At Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, there are the remains of ancient earthworks that are strategically placed. So, if you stand in a specific spot you will see the sunset directly behind one of the mounds and that’s the fall equinox. That’s just one of their uses; the mounds were very important for many reasons. Now it’s up to us to preserve this historic landmark. Recently I discovered that sometimes preservation can be pretty scary!
