What to know
This 12.1-mile “rails-to-trail” runs from Mellwood to Snow Lake, AR. The trail surface is finely crushed gravel. The Mellwood Trailhead is located in the small community of Mellwood and features a restroom, along with a few parking spots, a water fountain, trash cans, and a bike repair station. The trailhead’s covered seating area (similar to Elaine’s) has interpretive panels where you can discover how the community’s history is bound to the struggle to harness water and the transportation the former rail line provided for residents. There is a general store with restaurant right across the street from the trailhead that is worth a visit for supplies or lunch.
The Snow Lake trailhead is located in rural Snow Lake. Once a bustling community, Snow Lake is now a very rural farming area with only a few residents left. The Snow Lake trailhead has a restroom, a parking area, water fountain, trash cans, picnic tables, and bike repair station. It is located right in front of the abandoned historic Snow Lake gin which once processed cotton grown in the area. The gin is a picturesque symbol of mid-century agriculture in the area but is off-limits to park guests. The trailhead’s covered seating kiosk has interpretive panels about the history of agriculture in Snow Lake and the history of the area’s levee (one of the oldest levees in America).
