Things to Do at Queen Wilhelmina
Adventure Lurks Around Every Curve
If motorcycles went to heaven when they die, what would it look like? A winding, mountainous route passing through miles of forests punctuated by scenic vistas would be ideal. It would be a road where close contact with nature was assured but semi-trucks are prohibited. There would be other bikers for company, but not too many. The good news is that your bike doesn’t have to die to enjoy the best ride in the central United States; the Talimena National Scenic Byway has everything that a motorcycle could desire in the afterlife.
Fifty-four miles of nationally recognized scenic drive is spread out between Mena, Arkansas, and Talihina, Oklahoma. It climbs, curves, and dips across both Rich and Winding Stair mountains. Bear, deer, and turkey live in the dense forests on either side of the road. Panoramic vistas are spaced strategically along the route which allows the rider to stretch for a few minutes and take in the view. For the rider that wants to get away from everything except the joy of riding, the Talimena National Scenic Byway is waiting. Adventure can be found around every curve.
Bikers are a different breed. Their makeup requires a different habitat from the more settled parts of the human race. They need a road that can match the untamed spirit inside them. They know that it’s not the destination, but the journey that matters most. That is why the Talimena National Scenic Byway was named #1 Road Outside Texas by the readers of Ride Texas Traveler magazine.
This rugged highway isn’t for everyone, however. Sharp curves, steep inclines, remote location, and wilderness characteristics should stand as a warning to the less adventurous or experienced riders. Ride with caution.
The Peak-to-Peak Poker Run is a yearly event that begins at Queen Wilhelmina State Park and ends at Mount Magazine State Park near Paris. Bikers build a poker hand at different stops along the way and trade them at Mount Magazine for a chance to win various prizes. See the calendar of events for more information about this exciting new event for bikers.
