Melinda Mullins (guitar/vocals) and Betsey Mae Graves (upright bass/vocals) are the Layton Hollow Gals. They are joined by Chad Graves (dobro/banjo/vocals). The group is named after the birthplace of Melinda’s father, the Ozarks’ Grammy-nominated songwriting school janitor, Johnny Mullins. Best known for writing “Blue Kentucky Girl” for Loretta Lynn, Johnny also penned songs recorded by artists such as Porter Wagoner, Emmylou Harris, Faron Young, Hank Snow, Red Foley, Jean Shepard, The Wilburn Brothers, Sinead O’Connor, and Elvis Costello, among many others. Johnny passed away in 2009, and since 2013 Melinda has been on a mission to share her father’s body of work, much of which she unearthed in “the shoebox collection” of old cassette tapes containing previously undiscovered songs from his 60-year writing career.
