Arkansas State Parks Pilot Program Accommodates Cabin Guests Who Travel With Their Dogs

Over the years, pets have not been allowed in Arkansas State Parks cabins. Only service animals assisting visitors with disabilities were welcome. However, for 2007 Arkansas State Parks has implemented a pilot program in designated rental cabins at three state parks to accommodate cabin guests who travel with their dogs, according to State Parks Director Greg Butts. A “dog friendly” cabin can now be reserved at Petit Jean State Park near Morrilton, Devil’s Den State Park near West Fork, and Lake Catherine State Park near Hot Springs. Each designated cabin is an individual private unit. Neither duplex cabins nor lodge rooms
in the parks system’s hotel-like lodges are included in this 12-month pilot study.

The number of dogs allowed in a cabin is limited to two. For each dog, a non-refundable $40 fee will be collected at time of check in. That additional pet fee will cover the duration of the reservation. Additional details about this program including the rules can be found online at (see special notice) or by calling (501) 682-7743 or (501) 682-1191.

At the end of this year, the pilot study will be evaluated to determine if it is to be continued.

This program has been implemented at the request of the State Parks, Recreation and Travel Commission, the advisory and policy-making board for the state parks. Travel trends show that the number of Americans who vacation with their pets continues to increase.
