Arkansas History
Interested in visiting historical places in Arkansas? Many of our parks include beautiful historic sites, so you can learn about Arkansas state history during your visit. Petit Jean, Devil's Den, Crowley's Ridge, Mount Nebo and Lake Catherine state parks were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and contain beautiful cabins in National Historic Districts. Jacksonport State Park contains an 1870s courthouse and one of the few remaining paddlewheel riverboats in mid-America. The archeological state parks Toltec and Parkin preserve and interpret locations of ceremonial centers and "mound" villages. Historic Washington State Park, near Hope, is a historic village dating from 1824. Historic Washington has over 25 historic structures, several museums, two cemeteries, Arkansas's largest Southern Magnolia tree and a variety of tour choices. In addition to the story of Washington itself, history here includes Texas independence, Arkansas statehood, the making of the Bowie knife and the Civil War.
