Take a walk along the Prairie Grove ridge from the visitor center to the Borden House where the heaviest local fighting occured during the Civil War. A guide will offer details of the conflict, point out where significant events happened, and answer your questions along the way. Daily tours start from the Hindman Hall Museum at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tours last about one hour. You can also take a self-guided walking or driving tour.

Every day that the park is open, you can enjoy a guided tour through the historic Morrow and Latta houses, starting from Hindman Hall, at 9:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., or 3:30 p.m. The Morrow House was a Confederate headquarters prior to the Civil War battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. The Latta House belonged to John and Jane Latta, who arrived in Arkansas Territory in 1834 and raised 12 children. Tour fee includes access to Hindman Hall Museum and park videos.
Admission: $5 adults, $3 children ages 6-12, $15 family

Looking for a way to give of your time and talents? Volunteers are invited to help clean up the battlefield and other park grounds. Local Master Gardeners will prepare our heritage vegetable and herb gardens. Other tasks include picking up litter, raking leaves, painting signs, repairing and replacing split rail fences, and maintenance and cleaning of the park's historic buildings. Some tools will be provided. Please bring gloves and tools if possible, and wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothes you can work in. Coffee, water, and snacks will be provided. Volunteers receive a "Park Day" t-shirt, and will have the opportunity to hear a local historian discuss the significance of this site. Everyone is invited, including scouts, church groups, reenactors, families, and individuals. Note: Groups, please call ahead so we can be prepared for you. Contact the park for further information.

1861 Camp of Instruction

Designed as an 1861-62 Federal encampment, this event will encompass an "Artillery School of the Piece," a "School of the Surgeon," and "Infantry School of the Soldier." All those doing a Federal impression following the 1861 Revised Regulations and event guidelines are invited to participate in this 3-day encampment. The event is designed to refresh the skills of a veteran soldier and educate those who are new to the Civil War reenacting experience. This is a mainstream event and open to all who wish to participate as Federals. Guidelines and other information can obtained at
the event website. This event will be conducted by the First Federal Division Artillery Reserve in conjunction with the Division Medical Staff, and hosted by Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Reenactors, contact the park to register or e-mail the Event Coordinator at 1861coi@gmail.com.

Tour groups will be guided from the amphitheater to the front of the historic Borden House along part of the park's walking trail. We'll also go down into the valley where the heaviest fighting occurred during the actual Battle of Prairie Grove. Chances are good that there will be a few scary surprises along the way. Tours depart every 20 to 30 minutes. The last tour will leave at 10 p.m. Parking is available at the east Borden House entrance.

The original Battle of Prairie Grove, fought on December 7, 1862, saw about 22,000 soldiers fighting most of the day, with about 2,700 killed, wounded, or missing. Every even-numbered year, Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park hosts a battle reenactment. During the weekend there will be many activities including tours through the Union, Confederate, and civilian camps, various military drills, cooking, spinning, and lace making demonstrations along with other living history programs. “Sutlers Row” features a number of vendors selling 19th century reproduction, books, and souvenirs. The battle demonstration begins at 1 p.m. each day, featuring charges and counterattacks by Union and Confederate infantry and cavalry. The reenactment is held on the actual battlefield near the historic Borden House. Contact the park (closer to event time) for a detailed schedule. Reenactors, contact the park to register.
