Jacksonport State Park Campground and Boat Launch Ramp Will Reopen Friday, June 17

Facilities Were Closed Temporarily While Repairs Were UnderwayFrom White River Floodwaters

(JACKSONPORT, Ark.)—The campground and boat launch ramp at Jacksonport State Park will re-open Friday, June 17, according to Park Superintendent Mark Ballard.  “The floodwaters have receded from the park and the extensive maintenance repairs from the damage they caused are near completion, just in time for this weekend,” he said. “The park staff is looking forward seeing visitors once again enjoying the camping and boating here at Jacksonport.”

Ballard noted that park staff was joined by the Arkansas Department of Corrections’ regional maintenance crew, Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department employees, and other park supporters who all worked hard during the past month making the necessary repairs.  He said, “The park road washed out in several areas creating a major road repair operation for the Highway Department.  And, campsite picnic tables were coated in mud and electrical circuits at campsites had to be cleaned extensively.”  Ballard continued, “The flood damage here was quite a mess, but through their individual and collective hard work, the job of repairing the damage is now completed.”

The park’s 1872 Courthouse museum and visitor center remained opened throughout the flood event with the exception of one brief closure at the beginning of May.

Repairs are still underway at the picnic area, swim beach and pavilion, so these areas will remain closed for two more weeks.  Ballard noted that the playground’s sand washed out, and a heavy layer of mud and debris was left behind throughout the picnic area as the floodwaters receded a little over a week ago.  He said, “It is our goal to have the picnic area and pavilion open in time for the Independence Day holiday weekend.”

Located in Jackson County near the confluence of the Black and White rivers, this state park interprets the historic, steamboat river port of Jacksonport.  The park is one of the 52 Arkansas state parks administered by the State Parks Division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism.
