Devil's Den State Park
Kimber C. - Fayetteville, AR
posted 8/20/2009

I love walking the trails at Devils Den and the Yellow Rock trail has long been my favorite. When I was there Sunday, August 16th, 2009; I had a rare treat. After coming up a steep hill, I sat on a rock to catch my breath and enjoy the view. I heard the strangest noise to my left, but couldn't think what would make the noise. A moment later, it became unavoidable. A red fox was off to my left, barking at me. It sounded something between a deep cat growl and a dog bark-not really like either though. At first, I couldn't imagine why a fox would show herself to me, but it became evident when I rose up. She continued to fuss at me and tried to lead me off the way a mother bird does when you get too close to the nest. I took my cue; I was too close to her den, and headed on down the trail and out of her way. I think this hike will be my best for some time to come!
