Senior American Special – Friedrich Gerstacker: An Astonishing Observer of Antebellum Arkansas Petit Jean State Park

Admission: Free

Meeting Place: Rec Hall

2013 is the 175th anniversary of German hunter, traveler, and author Friedrich Gerstacker coming to Arkansas. His first book, Wild Sports in the Far West, provides a sympathetic and detailed description of life in the state 1838-1842. This and other fictional and semi-fictional novels and tales were set in Arkansas and nearby. These adventures made him a famous author and interpreter of U.S. life to Germans in the second half of the 1800s. In his honor, Dr. Skip Stewart-Abernathy, WRI Station Archeologist, will provide an introduction to Gerstacker.
