With the call of troops by Abraham Lincoln after the fall of Fort Sumter in April of 1861, Washington had to make a choice on whether to support President Lincoln or support a sister state that left the union. In the end they along with the rest of Arkansas decided to join the Confederacy. In May 1861, Washington sent its first men to fight for the southern cause at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Missouri. Come and see artifacts from the battlefield of Wilson’s Creek and hear about the different stories of men and women who made the choice to leave the Union. Take part in the scavenger hunt that takes you to different sites related to the events of 1861.
