Christmas Bird Count
From December 14th to January 5th thousands of
volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has
become a family tradition among generations. Christmas bird counts are held all across North America and are catching on in Central and South America.
Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars,
bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission - often before
dawn. For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference
and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to
leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season.
To serious birders CBCs are fun filled full days in the field trying for the highest tally of the day. They usually work in small teams and explore areas that are often overlooked. At the end of the day many participants gather somewhere for supper to compare notes, share information about unusual sightings, and hear a collective total of the day’s surveys. There are over 20 established CBCs held in Arkansas. Some birders participate in more than one CBC every season.
birders are invited to participate in the first Mount Magazine
Christmas Bird Count as part of an inventory of avian life. For 114
years professional and citizen scientists have collected data in this
longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird
populations. Volunteers are needed to cover areas in and around Mount
Magazine State Park as we tally every bird species within a 15 mile
diameter circle. Some
participants who live inside the circle and stay at home to watch their
bird feeders. Even if they spend only 15 minutes, this information is
just as important as those from the field.
Participants must contact the compiler, Don Simons email@example.com by December 27th.
