Documenting Memories
Last week, I had a chance to visit with Mr. Martin and his wife. Mr. Bill Martin lived in Washington, Arkansas in the 1940s, in the remainder of the Daniel W. Jones house. The home had originally been a large 2 story home, but due to damage from a tornado in 1907, the top floor had been removed and the first level roofed. Then, it was used as a single story dwelling. He was in this home, as a child, on the day that the 1946 tornado hit Washington. They were spared any damage but remembers coming into downtown to see the roofs torn off homes and other such damage. He said there were rows of cedar trees lining the walk to the 1874 Court House (or “schoolhouse” to him) and they were all torn out by the storm.
The visit with Mr. Martin helped highlight the fact that every historic site in Historic Washington State Park has two stories - its original story and the story of its preservation. There is no one alive to share the early stories. They must be gleaned from newspapers, deeds, journals and tax records. The stories in the intermediary of buildings and their early preservation are within living memory. We are working to gather these stories and images of past residents and visitors to Washington. Mr. Martin will be returning for more fun as we walk down memory lane. Please contact us at Leita.Spears@Arkansas.gov if you have stories and/or photographs to share.
