Changes are in store for Petit Jean State Park in 2013

For many years, Petit Jean State Park has had teepees available for rent during the warmer months.  In 2013, plans are to replace the two teepees with rentable “yurts”, which will be similar to “Rent-A-Yurt” units that are available in certain other Arkansas State Parks.  The yurts should provide more sleeping space (up to six people), as well as provide better protection from rainfall, since they don’t have a hole in the top like traditional style teepees do.

The park’s maintenance crew has been busy making improvements to the campground.  A major maintenance project is taking place this winter which involves replacing all the water lines in Camping Area D.

Some rate and fee changes will also come into effect in Arkansas State Parks in 2013.  Potential visitors are advised to contact the park they are interested in visiting for specific information on rates and fees.

First Day Hikes are planned for January 1st

Petit Jean State Park has scheduled free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative in all 50 states.  America’s State Parks First Day Hikes offer individuals and families an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike on January 1, 2013 at a state park close to home.  First Day Hikes offer a great way to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family.

Park staff and volunteers will lead the hikes, which average one to two miles or longer depending on the state park.  Details about hike locations, difficulty and length, terrain and tips regarding proper clothing are listed on the America’s State Parks website.  Visit www.americasstateparks.org to find a First Day Hike nearest you.

First Day Hikes originated over 20 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Massachusetts.  The program was launched to promote both healthy lifestyles throughout the year and year round recreation at state parks.
