October diamond finds
By Waymon Cox
Greetings from Crater of Diamonds State Park! Last month, 34 visitors registered 64 diamonds at the Crater. 41 of the diamonds were white, 14 were brown, and nine were yellow. While Arkansans turned in 21 diamonds, the other 43 were registered by individuals from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Netherlands.
The total diamond weight for the month was 10.17 carats, including a 1.14 ct. brown diamond registered on October 11 and a 1.74 ct. white gem, the largest of the month, registered on October 16.
The number of diamonds registered this October was 25% higher than last year. By the end of the month, 457 diamonds had been registered in 2012. If above-average temperatures continue, park visitors should have plenty of opportunities to find many more diamonds by the end of the year!
